Fishpond constructions started about 1,000 years ago and it reached its zenith in the early 19th-century. Fishponds have the potential to be the largest component of Hawaiian aquaculture. There is an opportunity to revitalize these ponds and perhaps make them productive, profitable, and even culturally rewarding. 500 fishponds provided local Hawaiian communities with aquaculture seafood. Fishponds offer opportunity to provide physical and cultural sustenance. The word "KUA" means backbone, and the organization serves as the backbone that connects multiple communities working to restore Hawaiian bio-cultural resources. The organization is not just about the physical restoration, it also connects out communities to each other, their history, cultural foundation, and even the future.
